Two boxes can photograph identically and cost very different amounts to make. If you are buying wooden gift boxes to resell, knowing which one you are holding matters — because your customer will find out eventually, usually at the worst moment.
Solid American black walnut, kiln-dried before machining. Not veneer over MDF, and not a cheaper pale timber stained to look like walnut. The cavity is cut straight into solid timber.
Kiln drying matters more than it sounds. Timber that has not been dried before machining moves after it reaches your market — it warps, and lids stop closing flush. Drying first is what stops that happening in a climate different from the one the box was made in.
Look at the edge and the end grain. On solid timber, the grain on the face continues around the edge and reads consistently on the end. On veneer, the face grain stops at a thin line and the core behind it is uniform and featureless.
Look inside the cavity. This is the giveaway. A cavity cut into solid wood shows the same timber inside as outside. A veneered box usually shows the MDF or ply core wherever the surface has been cut through, unless it has been lined to hide it.
Weigh it, and knock it. Solid walnut has a density you learn to recognise. MDF is heavier and duller; ply is lighter and sounds hollow.
Veneer is not fraud — it is a legitimate material with real advantages, including stability and cost. The problem is being sold veneer at a solid-wood price, or discovering the difference when a customer returns a box whose lid has stopped sitting flat.
Ask any supplier directly, and ask for a sample you can cut if it matters to you. We would rather you checked.
Our timber comes from a US supplier who holds an FSC chain-of-custody certificate. We do not hold that certificate ourselves, so we do not describe our products as FSC certified — a distinction some suppliers blur. If FSC labelling is a requirement for your market, tell us early and we will be straight with you about what we can and cannot document.
DAP, DDP, EXW and the surprise invoice at the border. What our published prices include, and what you still pay.
Everyone claims to be a factory. Four checks that separate the ones who make it from the ones who buy it and mark it up.
